STUDENT INFORMATION

OUR SCHOOL DAY

At Mayflower High School, we follow a five-period day with a mid-morning break and a lunch break. Mayflower operates on a two-week timetable: Week A and Week B. Reminders are always found on our school social media.

Assemblies are held every morning for separate year groups and cover topics such as keeping safe, standards and expectations, reflection, equality, freedom and prejudice, disability awareness, religious understanding and tolerance, sexual orientation and gender, class and diversity. We also have visiting speakers and student groups that lead our assemblies.

Students follow a pastoral programme within their tutor groups every morning when they are not in an assembly.

REWARDS

Every student has a student card which can be signed by any member of staff within our school community for demonstrating our core values outside the classroom. Once a student receives six signings, they are given a fast pass to use at the pods or the canteen.

Merits can be achieved both inside and outside the classroom for:

  • Our Core Values: e.g., helping others, being kind, being responsible, resilience.

  • Participation: e.g., extracurricular clubs.

  • Community: e.g., Duke of Edinburgh, Eco Club, Digital Leaders.

  • Work Ethic: rewarding your effort, attendance, punctuality, and being equipped for lessons.

Students receive certificates and badges for their merits in our termly Celebration Assemblies, where we celebrate our students' success.

JACK PETCHEY FOUNDATION

Mayflower High School is proud to be part of the Gold Achievement Award, where staff and students nominate students to receive a Jack Petchey Achievement Award throughout the year. Students are recognised for all manner of achievements—some are personal achievements, while others are for contributions to school life. Not only do the recipients receive their awards in school, but they also attend an awards evening at the Towngate Theatre in Basildon with other local schools and groups.

Achievements can include:

  • Helping others above and beyond expectations

  • Being a good role model or mentor

  • Showing resilience

  • Overcoming a personal challenge

  • Volunteering

  • Breaking through a personal barrier

  •

Winners receive £300 to spend on an aspect of school life they have contributed to.

The school is also part of the Leader Award, where staff are recognised for their contributions to our school and community.

If you would like to nominate any student for a Jack Petchey Achievement Award, please send an email to ecooke@mayflowerhigh.essex.sch.uk

EXTRA CURRICULAR

We encourage all our students to take part in extracurricular activities. There are activities to suit a variety of interests, including sports, creative pursuits, practical activities, and clubs to support learning.

We also have music productions once a year and regular music events and evenings. Students in Years 9, 10, and 11 have the opportunity to take part in our Duke of Edinburgh scheme.
